The ancient monkey puzzle tree, scientifically known as Araucaria araucana , is an emblematic native tree of South America, especially in regions of Chile and Argentina. This tree, also called "pehuén" by the Mapuche people, can live for several millennia. Its natural habitat is the mountainous region of the Araucanía region and is the raw material of the Mapuche Pehuenche people, who live off its firewood from fallen trees and its fruit, the pine nut.
