The importance of this tree lies in its subsistence as a raw material for the Mapuche Pehuenche people of the Andes, who live in the Andes of south-central Chile. They rely on its firewood and its fruit, the pine nut. It is an ancient tree that is protected and is prohibited from being cut down. It can only be worked or harvested when it has fallen naturally or is dead wood.
